Celebrating the forefathers of the steel industry, Bolckow & Vaughan, true men of iron who transformed Middlesbrough into 'Ironopolis'. Henry Bolckow and John Vaughan drove the dramatic growth of Middlesbrough and the production of coal and iron in the North East of England in the 19th century. The two founding partners had an exceptionally close working relationship that lasted until Vaughan's death.

Their long-lasting and successful partnership transformed Middlesbrough into 'Ironopolis', the centre of ironmaking in Britain, while their iron ore mines at Eston were the largest in the world. By 1868, four million tons of iron per year were produced there, with Bolckow & Vaughan considered to be the world's biggest pig-iron producers.
